It is been just two days since the Olympics has been over but rumours of the next Olympics has already started. International Cricket Council ( ICC ) made their intentions clear by tweeting about the inclusion of cricket in the Olympics by the 2028 Los Angeles edition.
Today ICC took on Twitter to confirm their intentions to add cricket to the Olympics. Well, it is not that cricket has never appeared in Olympics, way back in 1900 Paris when only two teams competed with each other in events- Great Britain and host of events France.
ICC Chair Greg Barclay said the addition of cricket to the Olympic Games would be beneficial to both the sport and the Games themselves. “Firstly on behalf of everyone at the ICC, I would like to congratulate the IOC, Tokyo 2020, and the people of Japan for staging such an incredible Games in such difficult circumstances. It truly was fantastic to watch and captured the imagination of the world and we would love for cricket to be a part of future Games,” Barclay said.
Considering ICC’s intention to bring cricket to the Olympics, the 2022 Commonwealth game will set a big platform for the inclusion of cricket in such big events. This will give us a better idea of ICC and Olympic host countries for the management of sports.
Barclay added: “Our sport is united behind this bid, and we see the Olympics as a part of cricket’s long-term future. We have more than a billion fans globally and almost 90 per cent of them want to see cricket at the Olympics. Clearly, cricket has a strong and passionate fan base, particularly in South Asia where 92% of our fans come from whilst there are also 30 million cricket fans in the USA. The opportunity for those fans to see their heroes competing for an Olympic medal is tantalising.”
Chairperson of USA cricket Parag Marathe believes that it is time for cricket to come back to Olympics. If that would work our then long 128-year wait will be over and cricket fans from all around the world will see how cricket can be such a compatible sport.
Further Barclay said ” We believe cricket would be a great addition to the Olympic Games, but we know it won’t be easy to secure our inclusion as there are so many other great sports out there wanting to do the same. But we feel now is the time to put our best foot forward and show what a great partnership cricket and the Olympics are.”
“USA Cricket is thrilled to be able to support cricket’s bid for inclusion in the Olympics, the timing of which aligns perfectly with our continuing plans to develop the sport in the USA,” he said.
“With so many passionate cricket fans and players already in the USA, and a huge global audience and following for the sport around the world, we believe that cricket’s inclusion will add great value to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and help us to achieve our own vision for establishing cricket as a mainstream sport in this country.”
Well this is not a first time when topic of cricket inclusion in cricket is in discussion. Every time when Olympics starts fans of cricket from all around the world start discussing about it. From the ICC’s tweet it looks like a long wait of cricket is going to break.
