First death from Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine in New Zeland

WELLINGTON: New Zealand reported the country’s first death linked to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on Monday. The health ministry revealed this information after following a review done by an independent COVID-19 vaccine safety observer board. The board looked into a woman’s death who died after getting the Pfizer jab.

Myocarditis is a rare side effect of the Pfizer vaccine, considered to be the cause of a woman’s death as per the official statement. Myocarditis is a condition that causes inflammation in heart muscles affecting the organ’s blood pumping ability and can alter heartbeat rhythms.

There has been no official reply from the Pfizer media team in New Zealand about the situation. “This is the first case in New Zealand where a death in the days following vaccination has been linked to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine,” the health ministry said.

According to the health ministry, the case got referred to the coroner for further investigation. The cause of death is yet to be determined. The board highlighted that other medical complications were occurring at the same time. It may have affected the outcome following vaccination.

The board mentioned that the benefits of the Pfizer vaccine are far more than the risks of both the Covid infection and the vaccine’s side effects, including Myocarditis. New Zealand so far has approved Pfizer vaccines only for public rollout.

New Zealand is dealing with the Delta Variant wave of Covid-19 after being virus-free for six months.
