KABUL: Panjshir Valley has been completely captured today, claimed hardline Islamist group Taliban. Panjshir was the last stronghold of resistance against the Taliban. The fight had been going on between Taliban and NRF(National Resistance Front) for many days in the valley near Kabul after the Taliban took over Afghanistan.
“With this victory, our country is completely taken out of the quagmire of war,” said Taliban chief spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid. Friday night, the war between the two groups escalated. Fahima Dashti and General Abdul Wudod Zara, the two senior leaders of NRF, were killed during the fierce fighting.
General Wudod Zara was the nephew of Panjshir resistance leade Ahmad Massoud, Fahim Dashti was the spokesperson for NRF. After a helicopter attack on his house, Amrullah Saleh, the acting president of Afghanistan has moved to an undisclosed location.
In photographs circulating on Social media, Taliban members were seen in the front gate of Panjshir provincial governor’s compound. In some photos, white flags of the Taliban could be seen hoisted on buildings claimed to be a part of central Panjshir.
However, NRF said that only the central area of Panjshir has fallen to the Taliban but other areas are still under NRF control. Located 144 kilometers north of Kabul, Panjshir is a highly strategic mountainous region full of precious mineral resources.
