Guinea’s membership suspended by the African Union

On Friday, African Union announced that it will suspend Guinea from it’s list of members because Guinea’s military junta overthrew the government on 5th September. The African Union bloc said that country has been suspended from all African Union activities and decision making bodies. Guinea was one of the founder members of African Union with the aim to promote peace, greater political integration and promote human rights on the African continent.

The ruling Junta, led by the colonel Mamady Doumbouya, took control of the Guinea on Sunday overthrowing and arresting President Alpha Conde. Alpha Conde has been accused by the Junta leaders of being corrupt.After throwing the government, Junta leaders lead by Mamady Doumbouya, took control of country and suspended the constitution and closed country’s borders. Also, they have seized government bank accounts and froze the state assets.

The guinea junta was also pressured by the ECOWAS(Economic Community of West African States),due to the coup. The 15-nation bloc has called for an “immediate return to constitutional order” in the country. The ECOWAS delegation also arrived in the country’s capital, Conakry, on Friday to hold talks with the junta.

The mineral rich country,Guinea which has abundant of Bauxite, but still most of the country lives in poverty. Conde, who came in the power in 2010, was the country’s first democratically-elected leader since the independence from France in 1958. He won the election third time in 2020 presidential election, with opposition accusing him of fraud and cheating and which led to opposition demonstrating violent protests throughout the country after the results.
