NEW DELHI: In a bid to reform and strengthen the present security architecture for protected persons (PPs) in the capital city , Delhi Police in it’s recent meeting at the Police headquarters discussed the functioning of security units under it’s purview and worked out a plan to put a formal structure in place.
The development comes days after the new Delhi Police chief RK Asthana announced reforms in the current structure of VIP security and announced to form a special unit to be called as “Delhi Police Security Battalion” (DPSB) , which will provide security cover to VIP/VVIPs in the capital.
Among other modalities, the eligibility criteria for the specialised security group is the highlight which specifies that only personnel aged 35 or below, having a clean service record and ones who are physically fit are to be considered for inclusion into the battalion. These criterias have been set keeping in mind the complaints that were received from several protected persons(PPs) about security personnel who were physically unfit and facing departmental enquiries.
As per a senior police official, privy to the meeting at headquarters “There is no specific criteria for posting of Delhi Police personnel in the security unit at the moment and that personnel are being posted without considering their age, physical fitness, training and firing skills, at times persons facing departmental enquiries also get posted in sensitive security unit, and tenure of posting is also not fixed”.
The strength of the proposed DPSB would be 1,053 personnel with DCP as the head, two ACPs, six inspectors, nine SIs, seven ASIs, 968 head constables/constables, including drivers, 10 multi tasking staff and 50 women head constables/constables.
The personnel inducted would undergo special training in firearms and martial arts under the guidance of Special Protection Group (SPG) to be better trained at tackling VIP security challenges.
To make it inclusive and keeping in mind the security concerns of women VIPs/VVIPs, it has also been decided that DPSB would induct women police personnel, who have good command over English to be deployed with women PPs.
“The selection of the personnel for the special unit will be done by a screening committee constituted by Special CP (DAP) from across various districts and units. The minimum tenure in the unit has been fixed at three years and extendable upto 5 years subject to their performance fitness and record ” , an officer said.
‘The battalion would function under the administrative control of DCP (DPSB) and will be stationed at Barrack no. 1 and 2 of the recruitment cell building’, as per the recently issued letter by 4 battalion of Delhi Armed Police (DAP).
