The Bahubali politics and the way ahead

Recently, BSP supremo Mayawati said, the BSP will not field ‘Bahubali’ or mafia candidates in next year’s Uttar Pradesh polls. What does the name “Bahubali” means in Indian politics?

Bahubali is a fictitious character from a Tollywood movie which was directed by S S Rajamouli. The movie had been in two parts.  Prabhas essayed a double role in the Bahubali series that was Amarendra Bahubali and  Mahendra Bahubali, who was the son of Amarendra Bahubali. The fictitious character Bahubali was portrayed as a young robust and brawny prince. How this kind of character is related to Indian politics?

Rajamouli portrayed the character Bahubali as a positive role but in the context of Indian politics, Bahubali Neta or Bahubali means powerful criminal-turned-politicians. This name was established during the 2020 Bihar assembly election. In that election, More than 300 contestants of over 1,000 candidates in the first phase election on October 28 have criminal cases; 164 of them have serious pending cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion, rape, and kidnapping.

The major chunk of voters tends to vote regarding caste politics. So despite their public image, they would vote based on caste. Lack of awareness to choosing their Netas by scrutinizing their background is the failure of a fair election. These Netas can finance themselves for the election campaign is also an advantage to the local parties which have fewer election funds. The lack of enforcement of law and dearth of time-bound conviction is also the emergence of these Netas. The use of muscle and money power makes winnability and this causes more criminals are participating in the elections.

According to the Supreme court judgement in February 2020, the political parties to publish the entire criminal history of their candidates for Assembly and Lok Sabha elections along with the reasons that goaded them to field suspected criminals over decent people. Not only publishing the criminal history, but Government should also make legislation to ban the candidature of criminal turned politicians Curbing the use of black money and ravage the impact of caste, creed, spurious promises.

The decriminalization of politics paves the way for a free and fair election. It upholds good governance, integrity, and social harmony.
