$12.4 million seized by Taliban from former top Afghan officials

KABUL: According to the Afghanistan’s Taliban-controlled central bank Taliban has seized almost $12.4 million in cash and gold from former top Afghan officials including former vice president Amrullah Saleh on Wednesday.

In the statement by two commercial bankers,the central bank issued a circular to local banks last week asking to freeze the accounts of politically exposed individuals linked to the previous government.

A large chunk of the money was found at the house of former vice president Amrullah Saleh. Also, Afghanistan’s banks are facing a money shortage and possibly have to close to the public soon unless the Taliban release more funds. Therefore, the cash shortage continuing since weeks and bankers fear the situation could lead to inflated electricity prices and food .
