Sansad TV launched; Shashi Tharoor, Priyanka Chaturvedi turn hosts for new parliament channel

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Sansad TV on 15 September. This channel is created by merging Lok Sabha TV and Rajya Sabha TV, jointly with Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. It is declared that the retired IAS officer, Ravi Capoor, would be the CEO of this channel.

At the launching event of Sansad TV, PM Modi called the new channel as the “new voice of Parliament”. The Prime Minister also said that this is yet another important chapter in the parliamentary system, as parliament is not only about politics but about policy, too.

Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman, M. Venkaiah Naidu also spoke in the launching ceremony. He stressed on holding meaningful debates which must echo people’s aspirations in Parliament and legislatures. At the same time, Naidu also said that debates should amplify concerns, clarify doubts, and deepen shared understanding; and there should not be just shouting in loud voices.

Congress’s Shashi Tharoor will host “To The Point”, and Shiv Sena’s Priyanka Chaturvedi will anchor “Meri Kahani”. While Tharoor’s show would be about candid conversations with eminent personalities, Chaturvedi’s programme would have women MPs share their respective journeys, i.e. from household to the parliament.

When asked from Tharoor about this new venture, he said that as he has interviewed people before, so being a host would not be a problem for him as he’s experienced. But, he is quite interesting for this as this time he would not be answering questions but asking them!

When the same question was asked from Chaturvedi, she said that it is going to be an interesting space as she would control the narrative. Also, she mentioned how “Meri Kahani” would only focus on women and not political parties as this show is about them and their successes and failures.
