BJP has filed a 2018 #MeToo complaint against Punjab’s new Chief Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi

NEW DELHI: BJP on Sunday brought out a harassment allegation filed against Dalit-Sikh leader Charanjit Singh Channi three years after the Congress appointed him as the new Chief Minister of Punjab.

Amit Malviya, the BJP’s IT cell chief, published an old news item claiming that Channi is being investigated in a three year old #MeToo case.

In 2018, he was accused of sending an improper text to a female IAS officer. It was covered up, but when the Punjab Women’s Commission issued a notice, the matter reappeared, Malviya tweeted, adding, “Well done, Rahul.”

Channi had apologized, and the situation had been settled to the satisfaction of the IAS official, according to former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

Channi had also stated at the time that the message had been accidentally sent to the IAS officer’s cell phone and that the situation had been resolved.

However, Punjab’s women commission had requested a response from the state government on the complaint earlier this year.
