NEW DELHI: Young Dalit leader and Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani on Saturday announced that he along with former JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar will join Congress today,also the birth anniversary of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.
The Congress has decided to make it a high-profile induction with the presence of senior leader Rahul Gandhi and Gujarat Congress working president Hardik Patel during the joining of both the leaders.
According to people, both the leaders will join Congress at the party headquarters today evening in New Delhi.
Today, Mevani and Kumar are likely to go to Shaheedi Park at ITO in Delhi to garland the statue of Bhagat Singh. Rahul Gandhi is likely to be present there also with a large numbers of the youth congress workers at the venue.
It is, however,not clear if the new entrants would be given a national role or would be asked to focus on their respective States.
Kumar, a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI), is famous for his rousing speeches, especially those during his JNU days. He took the political plunge and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from the Begusarai seat and was fielded against BJP leader Giriraj Singh.
Kanhaiya Kumar lost out to Giriraj Singh in the elections and is ready to join the Congress party ahead of the next Bihar assembly elections.
Mevani belongs to Dalit community, who is currently a legislator in Gujarat and represents the Vadgam constituency is the convener of the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM).
There is a hope of adding fearless warriors. New faces could give the Congress a much needed relief.
Apart from this, the Congress hopes the entry of Kanhaiya and Mevani will be good optics. The several young leaders like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sushmita Dev, Jitin Prasada, Priyanka Chaturvedi and Laliteshpati Tripathi- have left the party in the two last year’s.
