SHILLONG: As per officials, five people have died and 16 were injured after a bus carrying passengers slid into a river in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills region around midnight on Wednesday.
The incident occurred after a Meghalaya Transport Corporation bus carrying 21 passengers and staff plunged into the Ringdi river in Nongchram, around 185 kilometres from the state capital, according to the East Garo Hills police.
After receiving the information, rescue, fire, and emergency services were summoned to the scene. Five persons have been confirmed killed, according to a police control room spokesman. The injured have been taken to Williamnagar and Tura hospitals.
“Rescue efforts are still ongoing because two passengers have gone missing.” Swapnil Tembe, the deputy commissioner of the East Garo Hills, said, “We expect to find them shortly.” Nine of the passengers were from Tura, while the other 12 were from Williamnagar, according to the police.
