NEW DELHI: The netizens went crazy this morning on Oct 16th as soon as they heard that the former Indian team captain Rahul Dravid will join the Indian team as the head coach. Everyone on the internet and social media sites, including ex-players of different countries, came forward to welcome the soon-to-be appointed Indian Cricket Team Coach Rahul Dravid.
The tenure of the current Indian coach Ravi Shastri and other supporting staff ends after the T20 World Cup. There had been many speculations as to who will take up the head coach’s position. The rumours about BCCI consulting Rahul to be the ‘interim coach’ got air in the last few days.
Many foreign coaches also showed interest in Team India’s coach position. But BCCI, according to reports, wanted an Indian coach for the Indian players. There were also rumours that Rahul Dravid rejected the coach position when BCCI approached him.
According to the reports and BCCI officials statements, Rahul Dravid is now confirmed for the coach position as he accepted the BCCI’S offers with some demands of his own. The demands included Dravid’s desire to have a totally new support staff and a few other things.
After the IPL final on Oct 15th, the BCCI Chief Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah had a meeting and convinced this one time World Cup winner to join the team.
Rahul Dravid, the director of National Cricket Academy, has previously been the Head Coach for the India U-19 and India A teams from 2016 to 2019. The Under-19 team was runners up at the 2016 U-19 Cricket World Cup and were winners at the 2018 U-19 Cricket World Cup while he was the Coach.
Rahul Dravid, fondly called, “the Wall”, has been time-to-time credited for the success and the progress the Indian under 19 team and India A made. He is still active in administering both of the teams and monitors their progress.
The Indian former skipper will step down from his directorial position at NCA to join as the Indian coach. Rahul Dravid will start his role after India completes its T20 World Cup Championship.
After the World Cup, the current Indian Coach Ravi Shastri’s term will end and he will step down as the head coach. Rahul Dravid will join the team for their tour to New Zealand soon after the T-20 WC. According to reports, Rahul Dravid will coach the team till the 2023 World Cup.
As for the other staff, reports suggest that Vikram Rathour will continue as batting coach, while pacer Paras Mhambrey will replace Bharat Arun to be the new bowling coach.
