World Food Day 2021: Here are ideas to cut down on food waste

Every year on October 16, countries all over the world commemorate World Food Day.

What is the importance of World Food Day?

World Food Day was created in 1979 to celebrate the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It did, however, become a means of raising consciousness about hunger, malnutrition, sustainability, and food production throughout time.

 What is the World Food Day theme?

This year’s World Food Day is focused on honouring food heroes, or people who have helped to the creation of a sustainable world in which no one goes hungry. The idea is to contribute to the idea of building a hunger-free world.

In 2020, the theme for World Food Day was, “Grow, nourish, sustain. Together. Our actions are our future.” This was selected in light of the millions of people who died as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

What can we do to cut down on food waste?

According to the FAO, we can all be food heroes and contribute our fair share. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

  • Avoid purchasing surplus food items; instead, purchase foods that you would like to have instead of foods that you might save for a longer amount of time and then discard.
  • Pickling, drying, fermenting, canning, freezing, and curing are all procedures that can help food last longer.
  • Rather than throwing away food that has been left over from meals, carefully store leftovers so that they can be used in the following meal.
  • The peels of a variety of fruits, such as kiwis, apples, and bananas, contain significant nutrients that can be consumed or used in skincare products.
  • Use banana skins, coconut, and egg shells to fertilise your garden instead of throwing them away.
  • Promote small farms and local suppliers to help local ecosystems thrive.
  • Overeating is a problem that many individuals confront. It is important to maintain a healthy portion size because it not only helps you stay in shape but also reduces food waste.
