DUBAI: Pakistan successfully broke the monkey from their backs by defeating India in a World Cup match after 12 fruitless efforts across all formats.

And they did it in style, outplaying arch-rivals India by ten wickets in a T20 World Cup match on Sunday night.

Pakistan cruised to victory with 13 balls to spare after restricting India to a modest total of 151 for 7.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, the skipper and fellow opener, were never disturbed by Jasprit Bumrah & Co. as they pulled off the flawless run chase. Rizwan was unbeaten on 78 off 55 balls (64, 36), while Babar remained undefeated on 68 (52 balls, 64, 26).

Pakistan has previously lost all five of its T20 World Cup encounters against India. India has also trounced Pakistan in all seven ODI World Cup matches.

With a spectacular opening burst of two wickets in two overs, left-arm bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi set the tone for the historic win for the green brigade, dismissing prolific openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul.

Afridi bowled four overs and finished with 3/31.

Virat Kohli, who will step down as India’s T20 captain after the World Cup, anchored the innings with a composed 57 off 49 balls, while Rishabh Pant contributed 39 off 30 balls. However, the bottom middle order was unable to get going; and India had to settle for a modest total.

India scored 151/7 in 20 overs. In 17.5 overs, Pakistan scored 152/0. Pakistan won by ten wickets.
