Greenhouse gas levels hit record high in 2020: World Meteorological Organization report

GENEVA: Last year the abundance of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere once again reached a new record with an annual rate of increase above the 2011-2020 average. According to the World Meteorological Organization report, the gathering of carbon dioxide is the most important greenhouse gas that has almost reached 413.2 parts per million in 2020 and 149 per cent of the pre-industrial level. Methane is 262 per cent and nitrous oxide is 123 per cent of the levels in 1750 when human activities get started disturbing the Earth’s natural equilibrium.

The World Meteorological Secretary Organisation Secretary Prof Petteri Taalas said that “The Greenhouse Gas Bulletin contains a stark, scientific message for the climate change negotiation at COP26. At the current rate of increase in greenhouse gas concentration, we will see a temperature increase by the end of this century far in excess of the Paris Agreement targets and we are way off track.” The growth in greenhouse gas concentration jeopardizes Paris Agreement temperature targets.

The main aim of the Paris Climate Accord is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius and alternatively limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius as a measure to pre-industrial levels. Besides this, the economic slowdown from Covid-19 did not have any visible impact on the atmosphere levels of the greenhouse gases and their rises rates, even though there was a temporary decline in new emissions. COP-26 were going to be held from October 31, 2021, to November 12, 2021, under the Presidency of the UK partnering with Italy.
