Governor Das to become the longest-serving Head of RBI

NEW DELHI: Shaktikanta Das’s tenure as the RBI Head has been extended for 3 more years by the Central Government.

An official statement which was released on Thursday stated that the appointments committee of the Cabinet has approved the decision of the Government of India to re-appointment Shaktikanta Das as RBI Governor for a period of three years beyond December 10, 2021 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Previously, Shaktikanta Das had held various important positions in the Central and State Government divisions of finance, taxation, infrastructure, etc., and was also directly involved in the preparation of almost 8 Union Budget. Followed by which he took charge as the head of the Reserve Bank of India by Prime Minister’s Office on December 11, 2018 on the recommendation of the then Union Finance Minister for a tenure of three years.

It is to be noted that Das would become the longest serving head of RBI in these seven decades of Independence if he serves the full six-year period as Governor.
