Chennai receives a red alert due to continuous downpour all night

CHENNAI: The State’s capital Chennai has flooded due to an endless downpour all night.

“Since the 2015 floods, this was the highest volume of rainfall that the city has received in 24 hours”, said the MET department Chennai.

Nungambakkam has acquired the maximum rain showers of 21.5 cm and Chennai airport 11.3 cm, this morning.

As a consequence of heavy rains, Tiruvallur Collector has notified that 1,000 cubic feet per second of water from Puzhal Lake and 500 cubic feet per second from Chembarambakkam Lake has been released and 3,000 cubic feet per second was to be opened from Poondi reservoir.

Those living in low lying areas and near the lakes were signalled to vacate their houses and the Chennai Corporation has freed 169 relief centres for inundated areas.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin is now inspecting around Egmore and perambur regions of the city and is set out to inspect Otteri left bridge, Padi bridge, Sathya Nagar shelter, Baba Nagar, GKM Colony, Jawahar Nagar and Paper Mills Road.
