UTTARAKHAND: The state of Uttarakhand is celebrating its twenty-first foundation day today. The state of Uttarakhand came into existence on November 9, 2021.
This annual event also known as ‘Uttarakhand Diwas’ celebrates the formation of state which came into existence through Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000.
The demand for the separate statehood was raised because Uttar Pradesh government was unable to satiate the expectations of the Himalayan region of the former Uttar Pradesh and the region remained devoid of significant development in basic amenities and infrastructure. This led to the formation of pressure groups demanding separate statehood and prominent among them was Uttarakhand Kranti Dal. Their demand gradually gained momentum and with the passage of Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2000, and bifurcation of erstwhile Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal came into existence.
Uttaranchal was later renamed as Uttarakhand on January 1, 2007. Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the people of the state on this day by tweeting, “My warm greetings to all my brothers and sisters of Devbhoomi on the foundation day of Uttarakhand. With the progress made by the state in the last five years, I am sure that this entire decade is going to belong to Uttarakhand.”
PM adds, “The development work that has been done in Uttarakhand is a proof that now both the water of the mountain and the youth are being used here. I wish that this state, which is situated in the lap of nature, should continue on the path of development.”
The state is set to for assembly elections in 2022. In the recent years, the state is under controversy for the political conundrum, anti-environment growth process and ecological catastrophes.
