Banani rape case: Judge Kamrunnahar relieved, verdict and controversy

DHAKA: On Sunday, to pacify the situation Supreme Court’s Spokesperson Mohammad Saifur Rahman announced the suspension of Judge Kamrunnahar. At the Secretariat, Law Minister Anisul Haq also made a statement and stated, Judge Kamrunnahar will have to serve a show-cause notice, asking her to explain the reason of making such observation.

Supreme Court of Bangladesh relieved Judge Begum Moasammat Kamrunnahar Nahar after her controversial observation in the Banani rape case verdict.

On November 11, During the hearing of Banani Rape Case, Judge Nahar made the observation that, “The police officer wasted the public’s time and no rape case should be filed 72 hours after the crime”. She also added, “it proved that the university students had consensual sex before the incident.” Stating her observations, she acquitted all the five youngsters, accused of raping two University going students in Raintree House- a hotel in Dhaka’s Banani District on the basis of lack of evidence.

The verdict have triggered an uproar in Bangladesh.

Criticising the verdict BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said “Banani Rape case Verdict is an insult to women of Bangladesh.”

The case was filled in June 8, 2017 a month after the alleged rape of two University going students in seperate room by five youngsters. Police completed the testimonies on August 22, 2021.
