NEW DELHI: PM Modi chaired meeting on Covid situation in the country with Cabinet Secretary, Rajiv Gauba; Principal Secretary, Dr. P.K. Mishra; Union Health Secretary, Rajesh Bhushan and Niti Aayog Member, V.K.Paul. This comes after the WHO has declared a new Corona virus variant from South Africa, named Omicron.
WHO has classified it as the highly transmissible virus of concern. The same category includes the predominant Delta variant driving higher cases of illness and death in Europe and parts of the United States.
No case of new South Africa Covid variant, Omicron in India. Early evidence suggested that it carries an increase risk in reinfection compared with other highly transmissible variants. The new strain rises and evolved likely in immunocompromised, untreated HIV patients.
India is performing genomic analysis of samples of international travelers. The States and UTs are asked to conduct rigorous screening and testing. The travelers from Hong Kong, South Africa and Botswana to be screened.
