Shutters in Mullaperiyar dam opened without warning; Kerala’s Pinarayi Vijayan wrote to M K Stalin

KERALA: The water from the dam was released on 30th November and today morning, without any prior notice, flooding the Periyar coast and submerging a few houses underwater. Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, wrote to Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin, stating the concerns of the people and the state.

Minister Roshy Augustine said that it is unpleasant that the shutters of the Mullaperiyar Dam were opened without any warning. Around 2 am in the Morning, 4 shutters were raised by 30cm and at the same time at 2:30 am, 60 cm was raised shutters from 1 till 8, the same thing repeated till 4, said the minister in a press meet.

The shutters opened due to the heavy rains overnight, said the sources from Tamil Nadu.

The shutter should only be opened after the state could make necessary arrangements. Opening the shutter during the night should be avoided, said the Vijayan, on the letter. The water level should be, controlled at fixed intervals, he added.

According to the residents living in the region, “we barely get any sleep, since water logging is a regular thing.”
