The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has set an alliance with Former Chief Minister of Punjab’s newly formed political party named Punjab Lok Congress through which BJP would be playing the ‘big brother’ role which was earlier being played by Shiromani Akali Dal to BJP when were in alliance in the past.
The major issue that made BJP irrelevant in Punjab was the ‘three farm laws’ which were interpreted by the stakeholders as ‘three black laws’. The same also led to a long lasting agitation by the farmers community in India, majorly Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh. As of now it has been resolved by the withdrawal of the laws though the issue of Minimum Support Price (MSP) and police cases registered against agitators remains.
Punjab BJP president Ashwani Sharma came out with the slogan ‘Nawa Punjab Bhajpa De Naal’ (New Punjab is with BJP). It conveys BJP’s narrative has started to build up considering the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections. The Punjab unit of BJP that was conventionally been associated with urban Hindu traders, has endeavoured to broaden its voter base as when it was in alliance, Akali Dal used to contest elections in the rural areas and leaving the urban areas for the BJP.
With the induction of Former Akali Dal’s leader and Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) President, Manjinder Singh Sirsa and the alliance with Captain Amarinder Singh’s party combined with inducting various other prominent leaders from Akali Dal has highlighted BJP’s strategy to remain relevant in the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections.
The recent alleged attempted sacrilege incidents of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Punjab might turn out to be bane for the Congress led Government of Punjab that earlier proved to be bane for Shiromani Akali Dal and made the perception of Akali leadership responsible for the incidents. As for the lapses in law and order, Congress being made responsible as similar done to Akali Dal which led to reducing it to the third number in terms of seats in 2017 Punjab Assembly elections could benifit BJP in upcoming elections considering significant leadership vaccum for the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab, the principal opposition party in Punjab.
