25th December 2021 is 97th birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee

NEW DELHI: On Saturday, the nation will commemorate former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 97th birthday. The occasion has been commemorated as Good Governance Day every year since 2014.

The late former Prime Minister, who was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, was an articulate speaker and prolific writer who is best known for his poems, the most of which he wrote in Hindi. During his political career, Vajpayee, who was a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later the RSS-affiliated Jana Sangh, held a number of important positions, including the all-important Minister of External Affairs.

Vajpayee co-founded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980 with Lal Krishna Advani, a close ally and later his deputy Prime Minister. He became the country’s first BJP Prime Minister in 1996, and the country’s tenth overall. His first term, however, was only 16 days long.

The BJP veteran would go on to serve in the position for two more terms, from 1998 to 1999, and then for a full five years, from 1999 to 2004. The Pokharan nuclear test in 1998 and the Kargil War the following year were two notable milestones of the second term.

The BJP, on the other hand, was defeated in the 2004 general elections. Vajpayee left politics and public life in the years after that. He was been awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 2015.

After being hospitalised in critical condition in June due to a renal ailment, the senior politician died on August 16, 2018.
