Bulli Bai App case: Engineering student arrested, Uttarakhand woman detained

MUMBAI: A 21-year-old Engineering student was arrested in the Bulli Bai case. This comes after Muslim women who spoke out about political and social issues were placed up for online ‘auction’. Police also detained a woman from Uttarakhand who is reportedly believed to be the main accused in the case.

The engineering student has been identified as Vishal Kumar and was arrested by Mumbai Police in Bengaluru. He was transported to Mumbai yesterday, where he is currently being interrogated. He will remain in police custody till January 10th. The woman arrested is also being questioned.

The matter grabbed headlines on January 1 after several women on social media found that hundreds of Muslim women’s photos had been uploaded on an app called ‘Bulli Bai.’ Women of all ages who were vocal on hot political and social issues were among the targeted on the app hosted by GitHub.

The arrested youth is a co-accused in the case and was in contact with the woman, according to police. On social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, the two are said to be friends.

Among those listed for ‘auction’ in the sickening app were prominent journalists, campaigners, and lawyers. The ‘Bulli Bai’ controversy comes just six months after the ‘sulli deals’ in 2021, which too was hosted by GitHub.

The Mumbai Police Department has filed a report, the Delhi Police Department is investigating, and the Delhi Commission for Women has issued a warning to police officers. According to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, “the GitHub user behind the app has been blocked, and “further action” is being planned.”

Several opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi of the Congress and Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, have spoken out against the platform, demanding the government to take action and bring those responsible to justice.
